Lightning Debuts in Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy

Tetsuya Nomura had an unannounced game set for reveal sometime before Tokyo Game Show. That game ended up being Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy, a sequel to the 2008 action game, scheduled once again for the PlayStation Portable.

The original cast will be returning, along with some new characters to the series. One of the first of several promised, is Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII. It’s interesting to note that this is the first time we’ve seen her 2D portrait in any finished form. In Dissidia Duodecim, Lightning’s unique attack style will play upon the Optima Change system, allowing her to use the L and R buttons to switch between roles such as Attacker, Blaster, and Healer.

In addition, Square-Enix has announced a big collaboration of sorts between their upcoming PSP titiles. People who purchase a copy from the first print run of The 3rd Birthday will receive a code for Lightning in Duodecim Final Fantasy. This code allows her to wear Aya Brea’s outfit, which is only appropriate as Aya is able to wear Lightning’s costume in The 3rd Birthday.

No other characters from Final Fantasy XIII have been announced for this Dissidia sequel, but with the game due out in early 2011, it’s only a matter of time before the inevitable “opposite” to Lightning is revealed.
