Check out 25 minutes of Dragon Quest XI; "Restricted Play" system revealed

During the game’s “Countdown Carnival” live event from Osaka, Square Enix shared up to 25 minutes of never before seen gameplay footage of Dragon Quest XI as well as new details and a nostalgic, commercial trailer dedicated to the legacy of the RPG franchise.

Here’s what you need to know:

Samadhi, the Desert Town

A desert town known as “Samadhi” will be in Dragon Quest XI.

Q&A

  • 1: In making the 30th anniversary title and 11th numbered title, was there anything that you were inspired by?

Prior to the development of Dragon Quest XI, the team took a trip to Machu Picchu and from that experience, they used the location’s atmosphere for the game’s world map.

The monster from the above image is known as the “Incarnations of Time.” Scenario writer Yuji Horii said players will often encounter them at various locations and moments during their journey and overall playthrough. To prevent spoiling the game, Horii was unable to share any more information regarding them.

  • 3: We’ve already seen Ishi Village and the Delcadar Kingdom, but what other villages and towns exist in the world of Dragon Quest XI?

According to Yuji Horii and producer Yosuke Saito, there are about 20 bases in the game, including villages, towns and castles. Following their initial response, the two then revealed a Japanese-style “fire-town” for Dragon Quest XI, which is reminiscent of the town “Jipang” from Dragon Quest III. A major event will take place there.

Restricted Play System

Interestingly enough, Dragon Quest XI will come included with a “Restricted Play” system feature that allows players to experience the RPG with added restrictions. For example, Square Enix showed off an in-game screenshot depicting the particular restrictions when shopping. Although players can freely talk to the merchant with the restrictions enabled, they won’t be able to view the items he’s selling.

And with that wrapped up, check out the gameplay footage and trailer below:
