Adventures in Final Fantasy VII Remake's hard mode

Caution: The following contains spoilers for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Once you complete Final Fantasy VII Remake, you get the option to skip around the game using a Chapter Select feature. You also unlock a new difficulty, “Hard,” which prohibits the use of items in battle, and MP can only be restored by smashing crates, slowly regenerating it in battle by forgoing spells, or clearing the chapter you’re on. Bosses also hit harder and more frequently, but the overall strategy isn’t too dissimilar to Normal mode. However, you’ll find yourself needing to prepare for various fights a bit more carefully.

Luckily, if you’ve been using Assess in your first playthrough, it’ll help you build a strategy ahead of time by carefully selecting your materia and equipment loadout. For bosses who have a vulnerability to one specific element, you can socket that corresponding materia while beefing up your party with HP Up, Parry, Steadfast Block, and so on. Also, having foreknowledge of how particular boss phases proceed helps too.

Given that MP doesn’t recover fully in any given chapter, you’ll find yourself having to carefully consider when and where you use spells. Suddenly, busting out a Firaga spell against an enemy weak to fire magic seems less useful than saving it for a Hail Mary recovery during a tough boss fight. Chakra and Prayer materia become reliable staples. MP Absorption materia can also help conserve magic when you cast, and may mean the difference in being able to cast a powerful spell one more time or not.

In Hard mode, certain encounters, typically bosses and quest targets, will drop Manuscripts that will allow you to further enhance your suite of weapons with SP. Each character has three manuscripts that can be collected in all other modes, but the remaining eleven can only be obtained in Hard mode. Before starting this gauntlet, it’s a good idea to take stock of your materia and considering mastering several healing, elemental, and defensive materia in Normal, Easy, or Classic mode first.

Below, we’ve compiled a video and written guide on how to get all of them:

The Art of Swordplay (Cloud)

  • Legacy: Ascension
    – Start Chapter 9 in any mode.
    – Challenge Cloud vs. Wild Animals in the Corneo Colosseum.

  • Volume I
    – Start Chapter 8 in any mode.
    – Purchase from Moggie’s Moogle Emporium with 5 Moogle Medals.

  • Volume II
    – Start Chapter 9 in any mode.
    – Challenge Cloud vs. Shinra Thugs in the Corneo Colosseum.

  • Volume III
    – If you have not completed The Angel of the Slums side quest in Chapter 8, do so now.
    – Start Chapter 14 in any mode.
    – Start Corneo’s Secret Stash. The three storerooms are located in the Sector 5 Slums, the collapsed expressway (enter from the north), and the sewers under Wall Market. You’ll need to continue the main scenario until right before the very end of the chapter after Leslie leaves the group, then re-enter the sewers. In the area where the party chased the Abzu Shoat, there is a switch that will lower the water level so that a chamber inhabited by the Sahagin Prince becomes available.
    – Once all three storerooms have been burgled, return to Mireille in the Sector 5 Church.

  • Volume IV
    – Start Chapter 2 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat The Huntsman, who is weak to Fire spells. Cloud’s Counterstance ability is useful, as well as Parry materia to quickly maneuver behind the enemy.

  • Volume V
    – Start Chapter 3 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the doomrats as part of the Quest #2 Rat Problem. They’re weak to Ice spells. They move pretty fast, so be choosy when to deploy Blizzard spells, as their tracking is pretty slow and can waste precious MP when the doomrats run out of range.

  • Volume VI
    – Start Chapter 4 in Hard Mode.
    – Do your best to conserve MP in the gauntlet of fights before Roche. Use Chakra to heal and make use of an offensive Summon materia to help you manage multiple enemies. Lure mechs into Wedge’s traps whenever possible, it helps to keep the fights more manageable.
Roche is weak to Fire, and countering using Punisher Mode and Counterstance works well, just remember to block in Operator Mode to lessen the damage of his spells. Play defensively; he’ll hit back hard if you’re too greedy. Binding materia’s Silence spell helps prevent his Thundara and Blizzara spells.

  • Volume VII
    – Start Chapter 8 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Reno. Liberal use of Punisher Mode’s counter and Counterstance will carry you through. Targeting his mines from a distance with a high-level magic spell like Firaga also seems to take out a few at once as they begin to approach Cloud’s position.

  • Volume VIII
    – Start Chapter 9 in Hard Mode. Note that there are different dialogue choices required to obtain Volume VIII+IX and Volume X. Yes, that means you’ll have to play Chapter 9 in Hard Mode twice, which also means two boss fights against Hell House. Make sure you have at least 3,000 gil on hand.
    – When Chocobo Sam asks Cloud to describe Tifa, answer: “She’s great at handling the books.”
    – Ignore the Vagabond Johnny discovery event.
    – Proceed with the main scenario until you are tasked with finding the Trio. Find Chocobo Sam and answer “Heads” to his game.
    – Find Madam M and pick the most expensive massage option for 3,000 gil.
    – When Aerith asks Cloud to evaluate her outfit, answer “Looks comfortable.”
    – Proceed with the main scenario until the Corneo Colosseum; here, you’ll once again face a gauntlet of fights concluding with Hell House. In Hard Mode, it’ll spawn tonberry enemies that will use instant death abilities against Cloud and Aerith. Switch to Cloud and quickly dispatch them with Triple Slash. Equip several different elemental materia to Aerith, and a MP Up doesn’t hurt either. The easiest point I’ve found to cast magic Hell House is weak against is during Double Rocket Charge. Once the boss has charged for the second time into a wall, immediately cast a spell corresponding to the element it’s weak to. Even Blizzaga should hit reliably. Two mechs will also spawn in the back half of the fight; this is the best point to bust out a Summon and take them out quickly so you can refocus on Hell House.
    – Once defeated, complete the Burning Thighs quest with Jules in the gym and The Price of Thievery quest with Mireille.
    – Defeat the grungy bandit as part of the quest The Price of Thievery. Once the rest of Butch’s gang has been dispatched, keep a healthy distance from the grungy bandit, as his grappling attacks are easier to avoid. Move in and attack quickly after he moves, then duck out to use ranged options like Blade Burst.

  • Volume IX
    – Start Chapter 9 in Hard Mode. Note that there are two different dialogue choices required to obtain Volume VIII + IX and Volume X.

    – Once defeated, complete the Burning Thighs quest with Jules in the gym and The Price of Thievery quest (see Volume VIII) with Mireille.

  • Volume X
    – Start Chapter 9 in Hard Mode. Note that there are different dialogue choices required to obtain Volume VIII + IX and Volume X. Yes, that means you’ll have to play Chapter 9 in Hard Mode twice, which also means two boss fights against Hell House.
    – When Chocobo Sam asks Cloud to describe Tifa, answer: “She’s in great shape.”
    – Complete the Vagabond Johnny discovery event. When he asks Cloud a question, answer: “Yeah.”
    – Talk to the barker standing in front of the Inn, answer “How much?” Inside the innkeeper inside and answer “Yes.”
    – Proceed with the main scenario until you are tasked with finding the Trio. Find Chocobo Sam and answer “No deal.” to his game.
    – Find Madam M and pick the cheapest massage option for 100 gil.
    – When Aerith asks Cloud to evaluate her outfit, answer “It’s alright.”
– Once defeated, complete The Party Never Stops side quest with Johnny, then complete Burning Thighs with Jules in the gym.
    – A side quest called A Dynamite Body should open up with Chocobo Sam. This will bring you back to the Corneo Colosseum for a special match against two bombs. Equipping a mastered Elemental materia linked with a Fire materia makes this a cake walk. The physical damage the bombs put out is dwarfed by the amount of fire damage absorbed.

  • Volume XI
    – Start Chapter 14 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Hellhound in the Corneo Colosseum for the Tomboy Bandit sidequest.

  • Volume XII
    – Start Chapter 16 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Specimen H0512. This boss will summon reinforcements throughout the fight. Take them out to keep the fight a bit more manageable while dealing steady damage to the boss. Equipment like Star Pendant and materia like Warding with Poison can help mitigate a lot of health lost over the fight. Casting Regen will also nullify Poison.

  • Volume XIII
    – Start Chapter 17 in Hard Mode.
    – Challenge Cloud vs 3-C SOLDIER Candidates in the Battle Simulator. For the M.O.T.H. unit, keep blocking at a distance until the whirling blades on its body cease, then assume a more aggressive posture. Lightning spells work well here. Many of its abilities are lightning-based, so pairing it with an Elemental materia in your armor does wonders.

  • Volume XIV
    – Start Chapter 17 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Rufus and Darkstar. Like other modes, you’ll want to lure Darkstar away from Rufus and unleash attacks in an attempt to pressure then stagger it. Once it leaves the battlefield, play defensively against Rufus while keeping a medium range. Once Guns Akimbo ends, rush into attack while he reloads. Rufus can also be poisoned.

Sharpshooter’s Companion (Barret)

  • Legacy: Catastrophe
    – Start Chapter 14 in any mode.
    – Challenge Barret vs. Wild Animals in the Corneo Colosseum.

  • Volume I
     – Start Chapter 8 in any mode.
    – Purchase from Moggie’s Moogle Emporium with 5 Moogle Medals.

  • Volume II
    – Start Chapter 14 in any mode.
    – Challenge Barret vs. Shinra Thugs in the Corneo Colosseum.

  • Volume III
    – Start Chapter 14 in any mode.
    – Complete The Power of Music sidequest in any mode; all of the requisite music discs can be found in Wall Market in this chapter.

  • Volume IV
    – Start Chapter 1 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Scorpion Sentinel. Tail Laser will go off twice, so make sure that when the first one goes off, you position yourself behind the other fallen debris.

  • Volume V
    – Start Chapter 5 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Crab Warden. Save up your MP this chapter to let loose Lightning magic when the weak points expose themselves. Switch to Barret quickly to take care of the drones that pop up periodically through the fight. Elemental paired with Fire in armor will really help against Flametroopers earlier on.

  • Volume VI
    – Start Chapter 7 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Airbuster. Tankbuster will go off twice in a row, which can be especially pernicious in the final third of the fight. Position yourself appropriately so that only one character gets hit and be ready to heal.

  • Volume VII
    – Start Chapter 12 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Reno and Rude. Switch characters frequently to keep the two of them running about. Save a powerful attack for Reno’s Pyramid move, which is harder to break this time around. Counterstance works well against Reno as Cloud.

  • Volume VIII
    – Start Chapter 13 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Failed Experiment. As Tifa, be on your toes and ready to duck back behind a shipping container if need be. Have Barret pepper the enemy from a distance and support Tifa. The boss is weak to Ice, but ensure that it won’t move prior to launching a Blizzaga.

  • Volume IX
    – Start Chapter 14 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Tonberry in the Malicious Goons sidequest. Switching characters frequently helps a little bit, but the tonberry will likely get a kill or two during this fight. A mastered Warding materia paired with Subversion materia will prevent instant death.

  • Volume X
    – Start Chapter 14 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Behemoth Type-0 in the Subterranean Menace sidequest. Guard and block as often as you can while targeting the Upper and Lower Body. I’d recommend having Regen on all party members, and Haste helps quite a bit. Save your big ATB spenders for when the behemoth is Staggered.

  • Volume XI
    – Start Chapter 14 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Rust Drake in the Chocobo Search sidequest. Flying enemies are pretty annoying in general, and this one has souped up gravity wells that made maneuvering around battle a big pain. They also hurt a lot. Keep an eye on your party HP, as an unexpected gravity attack can take you down quick.

  • Volume XII
    – Start Chapter 17 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Valkyrie. Guide the overhead laser beam into the boss when possible. It’s not the most elegant option when you’re taking a lot more damage in this fight – you might even lose a character a few times in this process. Keep Raise and Arise on tap for this fight and position your characters away from ledges or corners. Blast it with Lightning magic over Wind magic, as it tracks much better.

  • Volume XIII
    – Start Chapter 17 in Hard Mode.
    – Challenge Barret vs. 3-C SOLDIER Candidates in the battle simulator.

    – Start Chapter 18 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Whisper Harbinger. There’s a lot of annoying cutscenes that can interrupt your big ATB spenders, so play it safe. Counterstance works well against Whisper Rubrum, and is usually the first one I take out. Try to focus on one target at a time, as removing one Whisper from the battlefield quicker makes the fight more manageable. When they fuse into Whisper Bahamut, top everyone’s HP off quickly to prepare for a sudden Megaflare. Counterstance works well for Cloud, but keep switching to Tifa and Aerith to keep Bahamut moving. After they separate, focus on Whisper Rubrum with the same strategy, focusing on one by one.

The Way of the Fist (Tifa)

  • Legacy: Dolphin Flurry
    – Start Chapter 14 in any mode.
    – Challenge Tifa vs. Wild Animals in the Corneo Colossuem.

  • Volume I
     – Start Chapter 8 in any mode.
    – Purchase from Moggie’s Moogle Emporium with 5 Moogle Medals.

  • Volume II
    – Start Chapter 14 in any mode.
    – Challenge Tifa vs. Shinra Thugs in the Corneo Colosseum.

  • Volume III
    – Start Chapter 14 in any mode.
    – Complete the sidequest Wavering Heart by challenging Andrea Rhodea to a pull-up contest in the Wall Market gym. You only need to complete the ‘Trainee’ rank to get this.

  • Volume IV
    – Start Chapter 3 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Wrath Hound in the On the Prowl sidequest. This bad boy’s weak to Ice but he’s also prone to zoom about, just out of Blizzaga’s reach. Only use it when you know he’s staying put for five seconds. He hits quite hard, and Barrier helps manage things a bit.

  • Volume V
    – Start Chapter 4 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Enigmatic Spectre. This should proceed somewhat smoothly. Try to use non-MP sources of healing like Chakra or Prayer and save offensive spells for the target.

  • Volume VI
    – Start Chapter 6 in Hard Mode.
    – In the room with the timed challenge where you originally earned the Chocobo & Moogle materia, attempt the challenge again. Once complete, check the chamber with the fan for a treasure chest containing this manuscript. Ice spells and Shiva work well here.

  • Volume VII
    – Start Chapter 10 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Abzu. If Abzu binds a character, they’ll go down quick, so break them free as soon as possible. Fire magic works well, but keep in mind that this boss fight is at the start of the chapter, and using Fire against sahagin later is a good option to have. Keep aware of your party’s position for his special attack,

  • Volume VIII
    – Start Chapter 11 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Eligor. While Wind magic seems like a good option, it tracks very slowly and I whiffed a lot. Move in or out of range quickly to avoid Sweeping Gaze. Aerith’s Arcane Ward works well for dropping double the spells when you need to use them, like Ice to break off Eligor’s wheels. Bring Shiva along and save her for this phase.

  • Volume IX
    – Start Chapter 14 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Abzu and Abzu Shoats. Elemental plus Fire in a weapon, plus Poison paired with Warding in armor works well. Ifrit saves my ass in the back third of this fight. Good reminder that Regen nullifies poison.

  • Volume X
    – Start Chapter 14 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Phantoms in the Missing Children sidequest.

  • Volume XI
    – Start Chapter 14 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Trypapolis in the Chocobo Search sidequest. Should be fairly straightforward yet lengthy fight. Keep everyone above half HP and use your big ATB spenders.

  • Volume XII
    – Start Chapter 14 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Sahagin Prince in the Corneo’s Secret Stash sidequest. In a small room, fighting these guys can be pretty tough. Pop off a quick Esuna for toad status and Fire works well too. Focus one target at a time, saving the Prince for last, as multiple Jump attacks really hurt.

  • Volume XIII
    – Start Chapter 17 in Hard Mode.
    – Challenge Tifa vs. 3C SOLDIER Candidates in the battle simulator.

    – Defeat Jenova Dreamweaver. A mastered Warding paired with Time materia is pretty useful for melee characters like Cloud and Tifa, as it’ll prevent the Stop status effect. Switch out to Aerith to rev up Prayer materia and things should proceed well enough. Do your best to avoid the black acid that drips in certain areas, as it’ll sap MP you can use to launch elemental spells.

Telluric Scriptures (Aerith)

  • Legacy: Planet’s Protection
    – Start Chapter 9 in any difficulty.
    – Challenge Aerith vs. Wild Animals in the Corneo Colosseum.

  • Volume I
    – Start Chapter 8 in any difficulty.
    – Purchase from Moggie’s Moogle Emporium with 5 Moogle Medals.

  • Volume II
    – Start Chapter 14 in any difficulty.
    – Challenge Aerith vs. Shinra Thugs in the Corneo Colosseum.

  • Volume III
    – Start Chapter 14 in any difficulty.
    – Complete the Secret Medicine sidequest. The Moogle’s Mortar can be bought from Moggie’s Moogle Emporium for one moogle medal. The Behemoth Horn is earned from completing the sidequest A Subterranean Menace. The Medicinal Flowers can be collected from the flower patch in the Sector 5 Church.

  • Volume IV
    – Start Chapter 8 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Rude. Wind spells don’t track well and are better used when paired with an Elemental materia in a weapon. Switch frequently between Cloud an Aerith so that Cloud can sneak up on Rude targeting Aerith and Aerith gets time to charge up a Prayer materia. Keeping Rude darting about the battlefield saves precious seconds due to his attacks interrupting constantly.

  • Volume V
    – Start Chapter 8 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Mark II Monodrives in the Weapons on a Rampage sidequest. Use the Wind materia’s Aero spell rather than Aerora or Aeroga. Since they track poorly, you won’t end up in a situation where an Aeroga whiffs and you’re out way more MP. You only need magic to dissolve their barriers anyway. Stay alert during this as three flying enemies in this space can be tricky to be aware of.

  • Volume VI
    – Start Chapter 8 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Hedgehog Pie King in the Kids on Patrol sidequest. Rush down his buddies quickly and then focus on the King. He’ll cast Slow a lot, which hurts more when there are more enemies alive.

  • Volume VII
    – Start Chapter 8 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Chromogger in The Angel of the Slums sidequest. Use Cloud and Aerith at varying distances to better manage the poison the boss lays out everywhere.

  • Volume VIII
    – Start Chapter 8 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Venomantises in the Paying Respects sidequest. Any equipment or materia that prevent the poison status should be brought along to this fight. These guys are weak against Ice, but only deploy it when they’re pressured or staggered to avoid a whiff.

  • Volume IX
    – Start Chapter 9 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Hell House.

  • Volume X
    – Start Chapter 11 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Ghoul. Like in other modes, stay aware of its two different forms to avoid costly Firaga spells and big ATB spenders from going to waste. With the amount of junk floating around the room. Healing spells damage the boss, but they’re better used as backup healing for your party.

  • Volume XI
    – Start Chapter 17 in Hard Mode.
    – Challenge Aerith vs. 3-C SOLDIER Candidates in the combat simulator. For the M.O.T.H. unit, keep blocking at a distance until the whirling blades on its body cease, then assume a more aggressive posture. Lightning spells work well here. Many of its abilities are lightning-based, so pairing it with an Elemental materia in your armor does wonders.

  • Volume XII
    – Start Chapter 17 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Swordipede. Ranged characters like Barret and Aerith should take center stage here. When the boss ascends into the air and begins dropping energy bombs onto the battlefield, unlock the camera and point it towards the floor. It helped me better position to avoid them.

  • Volume XIII
    – Start Chapter 17 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat the Arsenal. Primary Fire will go off twice. Target it’s arm with Barret and hit the first with an Overcharge followed by a Focused Shot with the second. Grind down the drones and begin unloading elemental spells corresponding to its weaknesses while taking shelter behind the pillars. Unload in the final stage to avoid a wipe.

  • Volume XIV
    – Start Chapter 18 in Hard Mode.
    – Defeat Sephiroth. The amount of things going on in this fight only increases with time, so keeping aware of your ATB charges and defensive options is critical. Starting off with Cloud, make heavy use of Counterstance whenever Sephiroth uses Telluric Fury while not going all out with MP or furious attacks. Chakra helps here as Cloud’s alone and it only needs one ATB charge. Later on, keeping all three characters as distanced as you can helps to a degree, as it reduces the chance for attacks like Hell’s Gate to hit all three characters. His weakness will shift over time, but I tended to avoid casting magic when he was weak to spells that track poorly like Blizzaga or Aeroga. Instead, those phases I used defensive spells like Manawall and Haste where I could. In the last third of the fight, he’ll spam Heartless Angel and Shadow Flare, so it’s very important you have a long distance runner when it comes to MP management. Aerith is the best candidate. Have her focus solely on healing here and you should build enough momentum to finish it with a Limit Break. If Aerith doesn’t join you, I prefer Barret as the healer in this stage.
