Marvel's Avengers 'War Table' shows off gameplay and modes

In today’s 25-minute ‘War Table’ presentation, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics showed off new trailers and gameplay for Marvel’s Avengers, due out on September 4th.

Crystal Dynamics editorial director Casey Lynch takes us through each section, starting with gameplay from the ‘Once an Avenger” hero mission. Accessed from the War Table, these single-player missions that follow the story of a specific hero.

Each playable hero has three ‘Heroic Moves’: Assault, Ultimate, and Support. These super moves can be performed by charging a heroic meter using normal attacks. Heroes also have skill trees that can be upgraded with skill points earned from levelling up. They can also be customized with gear of several rarity types, that can modify the type of damage you do and inflict status effects like Shrink.

Several dozen outfits are available for each character by playing through missions and collecting “patterns” to decipher at your home base. Some of the outfits will be available by completing “iconic” mission chains to unlock an iconic outfit, while others will only be available as paid DLC.

‘War Zones’ can be played single player with AI heroes or multiplayer. Missions can be launched from the War Table in the Chimera heli-carrier hub. Once you select a mission you can start matchmaking and customize your heroes before the mission begins. War Zones can take place in wide open areas or dense interiors and offer a variety of rewards. In co-op, heroes can use a team finisher when an enemy’s stun meter fills.

The Chimera base can also be repaired upgraded; factions will also be present to give you missions by collecting reputation – replete with their own specific rewards.

New heroes, regions, and stories will be added to the game after launch all at no additional cost. Also worth noting, players who buy the game on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the next generation version free of charge.

Marvel’s Avengers will release on September 4th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions will release Holiday 2020.
