Guardians of the Galaxy videos highlight gameplay systems

Guardians of the Galaxy senior gameplay designer Patrick Fortier highlights some of the systems you’ll encounter in the game, combat or otherwise, in two short video digests released today.

In the first, we get a look at the battle system in which you’ll only control Star-Lord, but have the ability to issue commands to your party members. Rocket will use his aptly-named rockets to attack multiple enemies at once, specializing in AoE combat. Groot can “root” enemies and set up situations where party members have an easier time attacking enemies, and he can also revive downed allies. Drax will take point and charge in, inflicting stagger damage and stunning them, while Gamora is primed to directly attack enemy health quickly.

Star-Lord himself is more versatile, and can use jet boots to fly around the battlefield while shooting enemies with his blasters, which can be customized with different elements as the story progresses. The party will have to use their abilities in conjunction to get through encounters.

Outside combat, the Milano is the spaceship the Guardians call home, and Star-Lord can wander about and talk to his team or listen to a jukebox. When exploring the game’s locations, you can scan environments to collect information and use your team’s help to traverse obstacles and navigate through puzzles.

You’ll be making choices in combat or otherwise that will define Star-Lord’s relationship with the other Guardians. You can earn Ability Points to spend on upgrading the Guardians, and Rocket can upgrade your gear with various Perks at his workbench with the requisite materials. There are 40 total outfits in the game that are taken from the Marvel comics or are based on new designs.
