New Forspoken trailer drops during Sony's September PlayStation Showcase

A new trailer for Square Enix’s upcoming PlayStation 5 (and later PC) title Forspoken dropped today during the PlayStation Showcase. This trailer gives us an extended look into some more exciting gameplay, as well as giving us a glimpse into the story and Frey Holland’s origin.

Fed up with her hard life in New York City, the gritty yet street-smart Frey Holland plans to leave with her adorable cat when she suddenly finds herself teleported to the beautiful yet cruel land of Athia. Now joined by a sentient, cynical bracelet of unknown origin named “Cuff” (Played by Jonathan Cake), Frey searches for a way back home by battling monstrous creatures with incredible magic, confronting the Tantas — destructive, twisted and all-powerful matriarchs who rule over Athia — and uncovering the secrets that lay dormant within.

Throughout her journey, Frey will be able to learn to cast dozens of different types of magic, and traverse a variety of diverse environments where she will use magic enhanced parkour, granting players the ability to flow, zip and float across Athia’s landscapes.

Alongside Cuff, other key characters are highlighted, including Auden (played by Monica Barbaro) a kind and open-minded young woman who prioritizes the needs of others before her own. She is quick to welcome and accept Frey in Athia and sees more within her than Frey does herself. Johedy (played by Keala Settle) is a hard-nosed archivist who assists Frey by providing her guidance throughout her journey. The trailer also introduces us to Tanta Sila (played by Janina Gavankar), an evil ruler who is the strongest and most formidable Tanta in Athia. She once protected Athia with her unparalleled prowess in battle, but now she has gone mad with power.

Hollywood writer Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) collaborated with Square Enix and Luminous Productions to help conceive the original concept for Forspoken, and award-winning writer/director Amy Hennig (Uncharted series) developed the story concept in 2019 — prior to heading Skydance New Media. Taking the reins as Lead Writers on Forspoken’s story and script are writers Allison Rymer (Shadowhunters) and Todd Stashwick (Devil Inside), who have crafted a tale about self-discovery and finding where you belong.

“Writing Forspoken has been a magical experience,” said Rymer. “The main character Frey is strong, complex and very relatable. I am excited for the players to connect with her.”

“Like Frey, it’s been a long, amazing journey for us,” Stashwick added. “I’m thrilled to finally have people adventure through the story we have built. I’m so proud to be part of this team, giving a contemporary, fun, spin on the fantasy genre.”

The score for Forspoken is composed by BAFTA award-winning composers Bear McCreary (God of War 2018 and TV series The Walking Dead) and Garry Schyman (Bioshock series). Together they set the tone for the game by immersing players in a world of twisted beauty by fusing contemporary electronic beats with a fantasy tone.

“We’re incredibly excited to be working together to compose the soundtrack for Forspoken. When we first read the script for the game, we were moved by Frey’s dynamic character and the contrasting themes of modern and fantasy that run throughout the story, which is something we wanted to reflect in the music we compose for the soundtrack.” said both McCreary and Schyman.

Forspoken is scheduled to launch in Spring 2022.
