Kawazu: SaGa series remaster, remake, and new title in the works

SaGa series creator Akitoshi Kawazu took to Twitter to thank fans for supporting the series in 2021. Earlier this year, Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend released on Steam, iOS, and Android after the Nintendo Switch launch.

Of course, with the new year upon us, Kawazu took a moment to tease what’s ahead for the series – specifically that a “a remaster, a remake, and a new title in the series” are currently in development. He adds that he’ll “work hard to bring everyone good news [in 2022]”.

The series is best known for its unconventional RPG mechanics, and traces its lineage back to Final Fantasy II‘s designs for a character growth system that eschewed a conventional level and experience point system for one that was driven by actions used in combat.

In recent years, Square Enix have been remastering older entries in the franchise including some that never released outside Japan. It’s still unclear what title will be remastered or remade, but SaGa Frontier 2, Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song, and Unlimited SaGa are likely. Details on the brand-new title are unknown, with the last original title in the series being the excellent SaGa Scarlet Grace Ambitions.
