Crisis Core Reunion will have new music and more voice acting than original

Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a “true remaster” of the original PSP prequel starring Zack Fair and his rise through the ranks of SOLDIER. At long last liberated from the handheld, Square Enix saw fit to update some of its systems, including the UI.

Today, in a tweet, they highlighted some of those changes, which include an “optimized UI” for a “menu-based battle system.” In another post, I sifted through the reveal trailer to glean what I could about the battle system, which seems to preserve the original’s mechanics but bring it somewhat more in line with Final Fantasy VII Remake and it’s newly announced sequel Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

The camera has also been improved, which is somewhat of a given considering the PSP’s sole analog nub being reserved for player movement relegated camera control to the single shoulder buttons outside of combat. In combat, well, the automated float seems to squeak by. Should the camera move to a right thumbstick, it should allow for a more easily operable battle experience, and hopefully more comfortable.

New background music has been composed by Takeharu Ishimoto, who scored the original and other titles like Final Fantasy Type-0 HD and NEO The World Ends with You.

Additionally, new voice acting (featuring what appears to be an all-new voice cast aligned with Remake/Rebirth) has been added to scenes that didn’t previously have it — a welcome addition. However, I wonder if there’s been additional work done on some of these minor cutscenes when it comes to facial animation, as the original had its fair share of “lip flaps” not matched to any particular dialogue. With higher fidelity models, maybe it’d look a bit odd if it’s untouched?

Set to release this Winter, Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Steam (Deck verified).
