E3 2013: Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster Hands-On
It’s strange that my first two UFF Network hands-on articles of E3 2013 are of HD remakes of decade-old games - but it just seems to be the current trend. Yesterday I tackled Fable Anniversary, the HD do-over of Lionhead’s original Xbox classic, and now it’s the PlayStation’s turn with Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD Remaster, the PS3 port of the classic PS2 FF. This game actually takes a completely different approach than a typical HD port. Where that is more akin to a full graphical remake, running on a completely different engine, this really does earn the ‘remaster’ title instead, choosing to change little and instead upgrade what was already there from the PS2 version with minimal disturbance to the original game. As such, the remastered versions of FFX and FFX-2 both essentially take the same level geometry and models from the PS2 version and lays higher quality, high-definition friendly textures over the top. The result is a game that’s stunningly crisp, the beautiful, bright colors of Spira and its characters popping out in a way they simply didn’t before. Without doubt it was one of the most beautifully colorful titles at E3. It’s also instantly recognizable despite being quite a

E3 2013: Final Fantasy XIV Developer Interview
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn took E3 in a big way this year - now properly detailed and dated and two months out from launch, it's clear Square Enix is placing high expectations on this rebooted MMO several years in the making. Despite promises of the next generation looming about the show, FFXIV took point - occupying a large portion of Square Enix's own booth on both PC and PS3 for curious adventurer's to try their hand at the mighty primal Ifrit. That isn't to say FFXIV will be missing out on those new consoles - in fact it's heading to PlayStation 4 sometime next year, just in time to take advantage of what will (hopefully) by then be an established player base. We had a chance once again to sit down with Producer/Director Naoki Yoshida in between signings and E3 audience hijinks to see how things were going and where the game was potentially headed post launch. Nova Crystalis: From everything it looks like, Scholar branches off from Arcanist, like Summoner. When can we expect to see other Jobs branching off from other classes? Yoshida: We haven't announced anything official, but we hope to have other jobs branching off of classes that

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Hands-On
At the ‘Future of Final Fantasy’ pre-E3 event on Tuesday morning, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Producer Yoshinori Kitase had a very short amount of time to explain his game to press salivating at the concept of learning more about the newly announced Final Fantasy XV. It was clear that he chose his words carefully. Rather than focus on the legacy of the Final Fantasy XIII saga, or the character of Lightning, he offered a simple summary of his game - he felt that people would be shocked with it. “Is this really Final Fantasy?” he hypothesized they’d ask. Yes, he argued, it is. Gone are the paradigm-shifting, ATB-driven turn-based battles of Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, replaced instead with a system that evokes those mechanics visually while being completely different in practice. It’s certainly both brave and interesting. Kitase is right to assume that question will be asked, for at a glance, it doesn’t feel very Final Fantasy. Then again, with the series about to switch to a more action-focused slant for FF15, perhaps Lighting Returns is the ideal appetizer. Square Enix is clearly keen to drive home to fans and critics alike of FF13 that this entry is something different and new. Unlike

E3 2013: Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Developer Interview
It's likely an understatement to say that E3 was big for Final Fantasy this year - and while the show floor was abuzz with dreams of Final Fantasy XV, the current generation still has quite a bit left to give. One of those titles tailored for fans is Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII - the third and final chapter in the FFXIII saga and ultimate ending to the series on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. We had a chance once again to sit down with Producer Yoshinori Kitase as well as Director Motomu Toriyama to quiz the pair on the game's world as well as the true reasoning behind a western delay. Nova Crystallis: You said there was going to be a large amount of freedom in the game, to go wherever you like without being held back by a linear story. Do you get the option to choose which of the continents you go to from the beginning of the game? If not, where do you start the game? Kitase: As soon as you start playing the game, there's a battle tutorial which is compulsory (you have to play it). But as soon as it's finished you'll be able to

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn – E3 Letter from the Producer LIVE: Part Two Summary
The final E3 presentation of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn wrapped up this evening with some very special announcements, and information, also including a brand new trailer. Without further delay please enjoy the brand new, and very informative, "Letter from the Producer" Q&A. The question on everyone's mind; What class does Scholar come from? Scholar comes from Arcanist! How does that work? We mentioned before during an earlier letter that our plan for A Realm Reborn is not to have one job for every class, we want branching classes into multiple jobs, and this is the first one, Arcanist will branch to Summoner and Scholar. Will we see more branching jobs in the future? Players can be rest assured that we will have lots more classes branching off into many more jobs. We know that a lot of players out there want classes like Ninja and Samurai, but whether they are going to be starting classes, or job classes, or even if they appear at all, we cannot say at this time, start speculating! Arcanist has Carbuncle, What about Summoner? Here is a picture of Arcanist with Carbuncle and Summoner with... no, this is not Ifrit, we are calling this Ifrit Egi. Ifrit Egi? That sounds familiar In Final

Lightning Returns: Square Enix Members Exlcusive Interview
A few hours ago, there was a Square Enix Members interview with Lightning Returns director Motomu Toriyama and producer Yoshinori Kitase. Rather than just summarizing the session, I felt it would be best to sit down and write out a (mostly) full transcript so readers can see for themselves what went on. As a disclaimer, please note that the translator quite often broke down into "Uh, uh, well", and very frequently used "And, like, so, kind of, kind of like". I cut this down as much as possible, and tried to avoid typing out bits where the interviewer or translator made a misstep in their speech or began a sentence over again. I hope this is an informative read for you all, and please check back in case we manage to get more.  Hostess: What was your vision for Lightning's journey, and do you think it's been achieved? Toriyama: We have depicted Lightning as a strong woman right from the beginning, from the first installment. And with the first installment she is a soldier. So we've kind of depicted her as being this stoic person, hard on herself, hard on her sister, and kind of a hardened woman. In the second installment

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Battle Event Recap
The Final Fantasy XIV battle challenge recap just wrapped up, which included a live commentary on the fight against Ifrit. Our hosts first started talking about the massive presence that the new FFXIV has at this year's E3. Not only are there large posters throughout the stadium (including in the elevator!), but images from the game can even be seen outdoors. The hosts later mentioned that the new FFXIV won Destructoid's award for Best MMORPG at this year's E3. The event consists of two teams made up of PC and PS3 users in a timed battle against Ifrit, with ten minutes in total given to the players. The hosts kept hoping the players would cast protect at the start of the battle, but noted that they've rarely been doing so all day long. The battle against Ifrit was scaled down compared to how such battles will be in the final version of the game, but regardless, the first team still lost. Ifrit used his physical mass, as well as various fiery techniques that interacted with the environment, in order to damage all of the players at once (this includes his infamous attack, "Hellfire"). Seeing the players fighting against a blazing Ifrit was evocative
