PS3 users who wish to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy XIV can do so free of charge, but according to Producer/Director Naoki Yoshida there is one little caveat to the whole thing.
Speaking with Famitsu, Yoshida outlined their plans for account transfer with the next generation version of the game and with it, further clarification on what would happen to the PS3 version once things were switched over. Because the upgrade is free, users will be forfeiting their rights to use their account on the PS3 should they choose to move over to the PS4 system. Even if you have multiple PS systems in your home, the PS3 version will be rendered unplayable and you’ll have to buy another copy if you want to continue your account there.
Yoshida also confirmed that the PS4 version will run at a full 1080p resolution – 1920×1080 – which is quite the step up from the sub-HD resolution of the PS3 client. Graphically, it should be indistinguishable from the PC version, according to Yoshida, and he hopes to show it to the public before the end of the year. PS4 players will also be able to take advantage of remote play via PS Vita and use the DualShock 4’s touchpad as a mouse pointer.
