Star Ocean First Departure R announced for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch By Raptorchan on May 25, 2019 at 2:46 PM

Square Enix has announced that the PlayStation Portable remake of the first Star Ocean game is coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch under the title Star Ocean First Departure R. At this time it is unknown if it will be a full remaster or a port, as no further details were released, but Square Enix promises to deliver more updates in the future.

Star Ocean First Departure originally released worldwide back in 2008 for the PlayStation Portable and was an enhanced remake of the original Star Ocean, which had released in Japan on the Super Famicom in 1996. It follows the story of three friends–Roddick, Millie, and Dorne–as they search for a way to cure a terrible disease that threatens their home world.

Interesting. Well I look forward to that. I’m still working to platinum SO3.

  • SNK

I hope it’s not Japan only again.

Bring this and Second Story over to the West! It’s not fair we only get bad SO games like 3 and 5!

  • Artemis Polara

You know I’d argue against 3 being bad. Why bring it up with me here? I’d agree 5 sucks though.

  • NovumZero

How is 3 bad? Gameplay, music, dungeons/content and story was top tier.

  • BlueNoor

It must be a remake. The PSP game on PS4 would be a joke.

  • Fair point.

  • 3 was fine. One of my favs.

  • On PSP you get 1 and 2

  • I want to revive SO and get into this but I’m told the creator only wanted a trilogy and so this break his wishes to constant pump out remakes and sequels and app games.

I say just make a new series that’s a spin off of SO or inspired by it.
That way they can make it their own.
Like that kickstarter game End of Eternity.

Yes, I should buy the dead hardware that’s all used when you purchase. Not to mention you have to buy said titles used, and I don’t feel like using my software for illegal activity like I did as a child.

  • Randy Marsh

Because we’ve already had this discussion a year ago. Remember?

  • Randy Marsh

Gameplay is somewhat good, graphics are fine in most areas, and music is pretty great. I love the The Little Bird Who Forgot to Fly to this very day. It was the main thing that pushed me to pass it as a child, and it is on every MP3 playing device I have owned for the last 10 years.

However, the story pacing-wise and writing-wise has always been pretty bad, characters (bar Maria and Albel) are pretty flat, the sound editing is pretty abysmal, the dungeons are pretty badly designed. I do get why people may think it’s good, but personally it was the second lowest point in the series. Five is pretty bad, only kudos I give that game is the music and graphical presentation.

  • I’m just saying it’s out there. Don’t get snippy. You can get those PSP version only as emulators too I think. I played a lot of a Legend of Heroes game that never came over here with an emulator.

  • Artemis Polara

I do remember, that’s my point. Why argue if you know I’m here. Cause I will bring it up again.

  • Artemis Polara

Well I got to disagree if you think the dungeons are badly designed. Almost every dungeon has its own unique gimmick that lets it stand out. (The code for Norton’s place, the light stone, the Saint’s Amulet, the water in the desert, the chess mini-game, the ice breaking to name a few) That was the primary problem I had with SO5’s dungeons, there were no gimmicks to them at all. SO4 had some amusing bits so I’ll give it a pass.

The SO3 cast are fine to me. Albel being the best of course. The rest of the SO3 cast were fine (Fayt, Cliff, Nel), serviceable (Maria, Adray, Mirage), or annoying (Peppitta and Roger). SO4’s Arumat was the only cast member I could even stand. SO5’s cast had no annoying characters but no one interesting either.
But yeah don’t lump SO3 with SO5 when 5 didn’t even have problem cutscenes 95% of the time. Being able to do the laugh emote during a tragic scene is beyond stupid.
To sum up good to bad: SO3 (Best), SO2 (Great), SO1 (Good), SO4 (Bad characters and story, good gameplay), SO5 (Lazy as f–k)
