Chrono Trigger update adds 21:9 support, improved controls, and more

Several years after the 2018 debut of Chrono Trigger on Steam, a 2022 update brings several new features to the reworked Super Nintendo darling. You may remember the negative response to the initial Steam release, with feedback that was addressed in a series of updates in the months that followed, but it’s been quiet since then. Here’s a look at what’s new:

21:9 widescreen mode is available as a selection as well as different screen modes. Improvements have also been made to the directional pad’s controls as well as the design of the directional pad to make it easier to see. When near a NPC, treasure chest, or point of interest, and exclamation point will now display to interact. The size of the target that marks dungeon entrances has been changed to better complement touch controls, with additional small scale touches.

The speed the auto-battle function operates at has been increased by 1.5 times, and is activated with a button press. Whether you toggle it on or off, the setting will remain from battle to battle, and the speed can be adjusted in the settings menu.

Last but not least, you’ll be able to save to 20 different slots.

The update comes ahead of next month’s release of the Chrono Cross remaster “The Radical Dreamers Edition”, and includes many new features and the newly-translated Radical Dreamers text adventure as well.
