Final Fantasy XV compared on PS4 and PS4 Pro By Erren Van Duine on November 11, 2016 at 11:05 PM

Final Fantasy XV‘s “Judgment Disc” demo has provided many surprises over the past 24 hours, revealing parts of the game we’d yet to know existed. One such discovery has been found on the PlayStation 4 Pro, which offers up two different graphics settings over its standard PS4 cousin.

While on PS4 Pro, players can choose between a “lightweight” or “high image quality” mode with both doing what you might expect. The lightweight mode seems to uncap the framerate to run around 40 to 50 frames per second while offering a similar image quality to the standard PS4 version at 1080p. The high image quality mode, however, takes advantage of the Pro’s updated GPU with increased anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, higher quality shadows and details capped at a solid 1080p and 30 frames per second.

We’ve gathered a number of screenshots taken from the standard PS4 and high image quality mode on PS4 Pro for you to judge yourself. For the best results, right-click and open each in a new tab to compare the differences.

Is this a joke of some kind? I am looking as hard as I can and cannot see any differences.

  • highsky00

The demo doesn’t support PRO since they will only patch the game on the release day. I have seen many vids compared standard PS4 to PS4 Pro. Weird.

  • Starlord

I am sure there is some graphical differences… But to me they both look exactly the same. No matter how long and hard I look haha.

  • Jesiah Grant

Agreed wait till the actual game is out

  • What’s worse? There’s a lot of people saying there’s no differences betwen standard and Pro. Quite funny.

  • BLUBBER

actually there are two pro modes implemented in the demo already.. ,,light weight mode” (hd, unlimited fps) , ,,quality mode” (hd, better graphic details, 30fps).
So yes the demo supports the pro already. But the Pro is overrated anyways if you dont have a 4k tv

  • Xervath

There are definitely some differences to be found, but I think those only are noticeable when you stand still and look for them.
    What I noticed are
    – Stronger anti-aliasing (paritcular the sunset-shot shows this clearly)
    – Slightly better transparency AA regarding the crew’s hair (though hair is hell to render and display properly no matter what system you’re on)
    – Softer shadows (guess that’s AA as well)
    – Slightly different and, depending on preference, better lighting (HDR at work?)
    – Minor difference in foliage

These things stood out to me after focusing on the shots for a while. And those are the keywords: for a while.
Sure these difference are nice for those that have a PS4 pro, but I see no reason to buy one yet, as the standard version looks amazing to me as well.
There is a CHANCE I will get a Pro, if it turns out that the upscaled version of the “standard” does not look good enough for my liking on my 1440p monitor…as the standard is tailored to 1080p (I only thought about that, like, yesterday =___=; )

  • Sweetbabyray

tabata said game will support pro AT LAUNCH, this settings are place holders till patch comes out

  • Stonespear

This is my concern also. I can see minor differences, but will they stand out more on 1440p upscaled? Will have to see.

  • Noctis Pendragon

Can’t anyone do a LQ mode vs OG PS4 ?
Everyone is saying they are the same but i haven’t seen anyone verify or proving it yet .

The OG PS4 could look worse or better or even the same but we don’t know for sure .

  • Noctis Pendragon

Are you able to tell what’s the difference between the last 2 screenshots ?

It quite big in term of lighting , in the LQ mode it looks like a ray of ligth bounced over the whole room while it didn’t in the 2nd image .

If it has nothing to do with LQ vs HQ mode it means that their GI solution for a static environment is quite precise .

  • Xervath

Main thing I’m noticing is the slits of light on the fireground. If you look at the shadows on both sides, they look very ‘dissolved’ on the standard version, and much more smoothed and aliased on the pro version.
As for the ‘light bouncing around the room”, I think that’s mainly the HDR at work, as there is a stronger contrast in the standard version, and HDR takes away strong contrasts (often) Standard version feels more “warm” colour-wise, if you will.
That’s what stood out to me, at least.

  • Xervath

Aye. There’s no telling yet. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Noctis Pendragon

Idk , look at the ceiling or the wall on the right and the corner , these areas are clearly lit in one screenshot compared to the other .

HDR doesn’t do that (even more when HDR is on on both pictures ) .

Yeah i see the less ‘dissolved’ shadows , that’s a cool thing to have .

It may be due to many things (higher res filtering kernel or better imperfect shadow maps ) but it is still quite useful in many scenes .

  • Shinobuden

*shrug* They look exactly the same to me. I’ve never had an eye for these kind of things. Oh well, not like it matters to me which one looks better. I just want to play the game already ;_; nov 29th pls.

  • highsky00

I think i will get the Pro for that 60FPS they are aiming for .And also for the super-sampling.

  • FerrariEnthusiast

Lmfo wouldn’t this be not visible if you have a 4K HER screen? Because to me it looks pretty much the same.

  • stevenm281

    There is no difference whatsoever

  • Stonespear

If you happen to find out anything, if you could let me know I’d be very interested to hear. I’ll do vice-versa of course.

  • Xervath

Sure thing. I’ll start off with my standard PS4 but if it becomes too annoying, I might opt for a Pro. But the monitor brand and specs might also play a part…we’ll have to see 😑

  • Xervath

That could also be the result of possible trees or something else outside, blocking incoming light and thus changing the lighting in the room…shed….carport.

As for the shading: amen to that

  • Zerox20
  • JamieRothery

You can see a huge difference if you open both pics into different tabs in your browser and switch between them.

  • JamieRothery

No because there are also graphic upgrades too. The better LOD on the plant life is the biggest stand out. http://gearnuke.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/3.gif

  • JamieRothery

The super-sampling looks fantastic on my 1080p tv with Tomb Raider. You have to select 4K mode for it which can be confusing since you assume it will do nothing.

  • stevenm281

    that’s more noticeable indeed

  • Codes McGodes

Noctis has more hair fluff in the standard. That’s kind of strange.

  • β€’december

    +1 Sir!

  • β€’december

These cosmetic finished really don’t entice me like most FPS fan boys,
But I’m hearing the real deal isn’t out yet until launch?
In short: It doesn’t take or add to the story, so to each their own!

  • highsky00

My TV is 1080i πŸ˜› So i dont know if Supersampling will make differences. Should i expect PS4 PRO deals on Black Friday or Cyber Monday or Christmast?

  • Yuntu

Game looks way cleaner, exactly what I wanted (oh and foliage etc. are also improved)

  • I heard people said glitches were in the Judge demo. I ran into one. What about yall?
To me the PS4 screenshot look good. Some even better than the Pro ones.

  • LTweetsU

Starting to think that they only delayed the game really to prepare it for a ps4 pro release.

  • Yuntu

yeah lets ignore the bugs and glitches in the demo and say they delayed it for better graphics on the Pro when they roll out the 60fps patch after launch

no they delayed because of bugs, glitches and polishing

  • Yuntu

which one looks better then pro? all look very clearly better than OG PS4 if not by much

i think in motion it makes a bigger difference

  • alef321
  • Jesus Christ

Same on Sony and Playstation people for making PS4 Pro. Just another money making machine when PS4 was good enough. Why don’t you just wait out several more years and just go PS5?

  • Justice V

After about 7 hours I only ever really encountered two. 1 was while fishing under the entrance to Insomnia during the rain. The water would get weird reflections from things like a fish i caught or the fishing rod in places there should be no reflection. It stood out so I’m counting it. The second was near the tomb of the old king. When ignis or prompto killed some of the birds their dead bodies would just freeze stuck in the air. Let me get a good look at them though heh.

Other than that only issues were standard open world game bugs, minor clipping here or there, sometimes characters teleporting if they get stuck etc.

  • Justice V

Best buy leaked one deal so far. 4k hdr tv (60hz though) plus a ps4pro for around $500 I think. The tv is super low end 4k and hdr though so likely not worth it. But hopefully cyber monday will have more deals. It’s hard to imagine the system coming out just a couple days ago and having great deals 2-3 weeks later though.

  • Yuntu

Because they need something to keep the adoption rate high. Basically both Sony and MS will try with their more powerful systems to try and keep the adoption of their system steady.

I say as long as they donΒ΄t make exclusive games this is just an option for people. And more options are never a bad thing.

  • JamieRothery

When the said the game would be delayed the give us a big video of game play and the video showed the fps was a lot worse back then and also the graphics were worse back then also.

  • I guess that day one patch is gonna have to be crucial.

  • NotCarolKaye

Yeah, I don’t see $400 worth of better in those screenshots.

The PS4 Pro irks me because of how it serves Sony’s interests. They want another long generation because launching truly new hardware is costly selling game for established hardware is profitable. (I know you know that. Just saying it as the premise of my gripe.)

    Anyway…….
So okay, if they want that it seems like they should have eaten the cost of putting out the long generation spec up front. I can’t shake the feeling that I was sold place-holder hardware at launch and now they want me to pay up again for, like, the real-deal PS4.

  • FerrariEnthusiast

Yeah looking closely I noticed the Pro version so far has better AA & plant LOD. But to see full difference we have to wait as patches cone after the release. As of now the differences aren’t convincing enough to warrant a need for a PS4 Pro upgrade.

  • Artemis Polara

I didn’t save a picture of it but I did run into a bug where the ocean didn’t load. I reloaded and it was there though. It was weird seeing beneath the map.

  • Caliburn

Well… The pro does have twice the computing power as the first one, but it’s honestly not all that impressive.

  • Caliburn

Personally, I don’t care how much better it looks. The fact that it has an option to play at a higher frame rate is a godsend. I wish they also had one for 60fps with downgraded graphics. I would much prefer to play it that way.

  • Jesus Christ

I just saw the comparison video. I’m not seeing much of a difference. I mean, it’s funny because people on this site tend to call me for nitpicking. But, these graphical improvements… don’t really impress me. I aint nitpicking on small things.

  • Jesus Christ

There’s a youtube video talking about how PS4 Pro is all about the “appeal to power” or “power appeal”. The more powerful the better. And I think it’s so dangerous because it drains your bank account. You can play FFXV just fine with regular PS4, heck, isn’t much of the development on PS4 and not PS4 Pro?

I think I’d be so much mroe happy knowing I save money buying a regular PS4 at a fraction of pro’s price and have money leftover for future games. Pro is not a good invement in Jesus’s Name.

    Bye sexy beard man

  • The day one patch will fix it I hope.

  • Caliburn

There’s a lot more to preformance than simply computing power, or else my PC would utterly oblitirate the PS4. Instead it simply stomps all over it.

  • Xervath

Quick note I’d like to make: it appears that both the PS4 and PS4 pro are incapable of recognizing 1440p panels. They will recognize either 1080p screens or 4K screens. If you run a 1440p screen, supposedly everything gets upscaled from 1080p UNLESS your 1440p screen has the option to set a (desktop)resolution without pulling any virtual tricks to make it happen, in which case you will get a downscaled 4K image.

Again, this supposedly goes for both the PS4 and the PS4P. I’m reading this on several sites, so I’m going with the assumption that it’s true…meaning there is little use for me (us?) in upgrading the system, unless you wish to make use of the other features presented by the system (individual title upgrades, for example)

  • Stonespear

This is good news. I was tempted to get a PS4P but I’ll likely stick with a regular PS4 and wait for the PC port to play it with the bells and whistles.

    Thanks for the information.

  • Xervath

Will likely do the same thing.
At that, I took a look at 2 games, quickly to see if the quality was absolute crap or if it was bearable…. For me personally I didn’t even notice all that much. Granted I did it in a hurry, but if at first glance I don’t notice anything too strange…it should be alright. (might take an in-depth look later on)

Games I tested were ‘Last of us remastered’ and ‘Infamous second son’
For point of reference, I’ve got a PG279Q (better known as the ROG Swift) as I’m sure individual monitors make a difference as well in upscaling and whatnot.

    My 2 pennies.

  • Stonespear

The IPS Swift has every bell and whistle, if it doesn’t look anything special then I doubt this little HannsG will make it look as it should.

Thanks again for trying this out, saving me some money here.

  • Xervath

Considering that, by all accounts and purposes, images should look washed and blurry if you upscale from 1080 to 1440, the result I’m seeing being “nothing special” is perhaps the best I could hope for.
But yeah, glad to be of help, g’luck in further endeavors, and ultimately with the game, of course!

  • SiliconNooB

Resolution aside, they look a close match. SE did well with their optimisation [I was worried after the demo].

  • It looks more like pro has just higher brightness…-__-
btw don’t care about the pro thing, still Neo (name) sounds better imo, tho as long as i can play at 1080p with normal fps rate…blah blah..i’m good..etc
