Final Fantasy XIV players gather to remember Stephen Critchlow

Stephen Critchlow, British actor and English voice of Count Edmont de Fortemps in Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward, passed away at the age of 54 this past Sunday, his agency shared.

Known for his theater, television and radio work in programs like Doctor Who and Torchwood, his voice could be heard in other video games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, Critchlow attended Mountview Drama School in London and led a career that featured him in over 200 BBC radio productions.

In Final Fantasy XIV, Critchlow’s character serves as the narrator for the Heavensward expansion, and patron of House Fortemps, one of four high houses of Ishgard that provides the Warrior of Light and his fellow Scions of the Seventh Dawn refuge after they flee from the events that conclude A Realm Reborn.

This act of kindness sets in stage the events that lead Ishgard and its citizens out from a thousand-year war and towards a future forged in peace. His narration memorably bookends the major events of the expansion, and masterfully sets the tone for one of the game’s most fondly-remembered stories.

Fittingly, players gathered at House Fortemps’ manor in Ishgard’s Pillars in tribute to Critchlow, wearing the House Fortemps Kite Shield and displaying the campfire minion that has become players’ expression of solemn remembrance. That minion was also prominently seen after the death of Berserk artist Kentaro Miura, which heavily influenced the depiction of the game’s Dark Knight job.

Outside the game players have also been remembering Critchlow by supporting his fundraiser for the NHS.
