Super Mario RPG remake coming to Nintendo Switch on November 17

At today’s Nintendo Direct, a remake of 1996 Super Nintendo game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars developed by Square was announced for Nintendo Switch. Releasing on November 17th, pre-orders are available today.

The beloved game is often cited as one of the best games of its generation, and features Mario’s adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond. He is joined by a cloud boy named Mallow, a doll named Geno who is possessed by a spirit, Bowser, and Princess Toadstool. It’s the first RPG in the Mario franchise and was borne from creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s desire to create a Mario RPG and from Square’s desire to expand to a worldwide market.

The game features a turn-based combat system that uses elements of timing like a platformer, and enemies are visible in field maps that when crossed will start an encounter. It also features artwork by Final Fantasy alum Hideo Minaba and a score which was originally created (and now re-arranged) by Yoko Shimomura.
