Outriders studio lays off more than 30 people tied to a new project with Square Enix

According to a report from Kotaku today, Polish studio People Can Fly has laid off 30 people who were working on an unannounced title to be published by Square Enix planned for release in 2026. According to the game’s development director Adam Alker, the cuts to the project, referred to as “Project Gemini” were due to “limitations with the budget and shrinking scope.”

In the report, Kotaku states that 20 more people were also cut from the project but will be working on other games in development at the company. Per a January 31 release, Project Gemini was described was staffing with a work-for-hire model using independent contractors–a common practice in the industry.

Outriders, a class-based looter shooter, was published by Square Enix in 2021. The game features up to three-player co-op and is set in the distant future where humanity has fled the ecological collapse of Earth and is looking to settle the world of Enoch. Their plans go awry when a powerful phenomenon maroons the expeditioners, and several decades elapse. In that time, opposing factions of humans form, factions that your created character will be thrust between.

People Can Fly are also known for their work developing titles like Bulletstorm (2011) and Gears of War Judgment (2013). They have several upcoming game in development with Xbox Game Studios and Take-Two Interactive as publishing partners, as well as several self-published titles.
