Nomura’s departure from Final Fantasy XV is no doubt a troubling situation. Having stayed silent over the course of a year, it became evident that things at Square Enix weren’t going smoothly when the game failed to show up following E3 2013 despite promises to the contrary. Fast forward to today and we now know that Hajime Tabata has been assigned as the new director, who is now tasked with “completing the production of Final Fantasy XV and ensuring the delivery of the highest quality Final Fantasy title to date,” according to CEO Yosuke Matsuda.
Crisis Core and Final Fantasy Type-0 director Hajime Tabata has stepped into fill Nomura’s shoes, having sat down with him to preserve his original vision. Nomura mainly worked on the original concept for XV’s story and characters, but we still know very little about why he really left partway through the project. Unfortunately, Famitsu couldn’t get much out of him either.
Speaking to the magazine when asked about XV’s situation Nomura commented, “It was the company’s decision, I can’t say anything more than that.”
As for Nomura’s current prospects, he’s been whisked away to help Kingdom Hearts III get its bearings, although engine-related problems have forced him to double down on the scenario, world and clothing design side of things.
