Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series surpasses two million shipments and digital sales
Following its release on both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series has enjoyed over two million worldwide shipments and digital sales, Square Enix announced today. The games were originally released on Steam and smartphone devices back in 2021 and 2022 respectively, and have recently seen a number of quality of life upgrades through the launch on console platforms. All six titles (Final Fantasy I through VI) are now available for purchase either individually or in a complete bundle from the PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, Steam, the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon App Store. Square Enix notes that these worldwide sales figures are based on reporting received from digital and retail partners, as well as internal reporting. The Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters updates are great, here’s hoping Steam gets them
I’ve already taken the plunge and purchased the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters on Steam when they released last year, and they've been quite good for a dedicated PC session and as portable companions on Steam Deck. When Square Enix announced that an updated version will be hitting consoles next week, I was a little green with envy. Why? Well, the console version sports some additional features that currently aren’t present in the Steam version. In the announcement trailer, we see that a new pixel-based font has been implemented that has a much wider kerning than previous releases, a decision that was met with widespread derision - and rightly so, as the default font is extremely hard to read at a distance and, well, is just kind of ugly. I can certainly understand how a unified font choice would more easily allow for more localization options into more languages (which is great by all accounts) but I just wish the trade-off hadn't been as severe. Personally, I replaced it with the font that originally appeared in Final Fantasy VI, a remarkably easy endeavor. It’s got a square-ness and a pixel styling in the Goldilocks zone, though perhaps I’m a tad biased given it

This remaster series includes the first six numbered titles in the franchise, 2D games originating from the NES and SNES consoles. New features include a pixel font with a notably wider kerning that the previously released PC and smartphone version (some languages will not support this, though which ones are yet unclear), an option to change between original and remastered soundtracks, an option to set encounter rates, experience gain, gil gain, and other features to higher levels, and the option to return to title even when in battle scenes. ESRB rates Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
Square Enix's Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series is a new take on the first six numbered titles in the franchise, with an updated 2D format, new music, and more. Based on the original versions of the game (no content from later iterations from the GameBoy Advance, etc), the pixel remasters have been exclusive Steam. Eagle-eyed Reddit users noticed an update to the ESRB's website that now lists PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch as platforms for each of the six titles where it only listed Windows PC previously. No additional information is available at this time, but it seems like an announcement can't be too far away. Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster Review
For as long as I can remember, Final Fantasy VI has been heralded as "the secret actual best entry" in the Final Fantasy canon. If so many people keep saying it, how secretive can it be? If a million fans whisper a certain sentiment, that whisper becomes a scream. At this point, in 2022, I think it's fair to start this review by saying that a lot of people think so highly of it, and there's no amount of quietness behind their proclamation. Do I think Final Fantasy VI is the reigning chocobo champion? Honestly, not really. It's a great game and a seminal moment in Square's history. It gets a lot of things right, but there are wrinkles in its battle and customization systems that don't really wow me. That said, it's likely my favorite of the 2D-era entries. So, while you won't necessarily see me heaping quite as much praise upon the original release as you will in other reviews, bear in mind that FFVI is still quite special to me and the ultimate case study in whether the Pixel Remaster series would get things "right" or leave me with a disappointing aftertaste. The last chapter in the return to

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will release in February 2022 according to an update from Square Enix posted on the official Final Fantasy twitter account today. The company states that "in order to bring you the best experience possible, we're giving ourselves the necessary time to apply final polish while finishing development on the game." The game begins Terra Branford, the child of a human and an Esper, finds herself drawn into the conflict after being captured by the megalomanical magitek knight Kefka Palazzo. Featuring a turn-based battles using the Active Time Battle system, characters feature their own unique skills that can be complemented by magic spells learned by equipping the magicite crystals belonging to various Espers. Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster Review
People love to initiate conversations about Final Fantasy V by labeling it "underrated." For the longest time, I agreed with that assessment. It's a great game that has always existed in the shadow of its SNES-era brethren, Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI. Cecil, Kain, Rydia? Hot topics. Terra, Celes, Shadow? Hot topics. Bartz, Galuf, Faris? It's telling, perhaps, when the most frequent comment on the internet regarding FFV's protagonist is that his Japanese name is "Butz." It's not about his spirit of adventure and kindhearted ways. It's about butts. That may hold true to this day. But several years ago, something started to change. An annual celebration in Final Fantasy V's fandom ballooned in size, and the broader Square Enix fandom took notice. That celebration is called "Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta." It's cool. You can read about it over at our sister site. What matters, in the context of this review, is that it turned a lot of heads. And thus, when Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster launched a few weeks back on Steam and mobile devices, there was notably more interest in a return trip to the world of butts than there would have been a decade
